New Year, New Mindset, New Engine, New Prototype

Back in September (2023) Unity ruined the trust of is community. As a consequence I and many other devs flocked to different engines, hoping to escape what seemed to be a sinking ship. For me that was the Godot Engine. For most of last year I had been working on a 3rd person photography puzzle adventure game called Uncle, at least up until the drama. When I decided to try out Godot I figured I'd test things out first before porting a fairly large project over from Unity.

This is what became the prototype for Repo.

Repo is what I'm referring to as a "first person looter". I don't know if there's already a name for this genre of game (other than walking simulator), but that's what I'm calling it. In Repo you play as a repossession agent for Good Neighbor Adjustment Bureau and are tasked with collecting on a debt for a client. Think looting in Bethesda RPGs, minus the combat or RPG mechanics. You explore a space and repo valuable, and qualified merchandise.

Initially I had envisioned Repo as a larger experience, but knowing my inability to finish larger projects I opted to keep it small and simple. At least this way I could finish something and show it off to friends, as well as gives me the opportunity to add more features / levels / etc. later on. This was for the best as learning a new engine takes a lot of time and energy. Even as quickly as I was picking things up, there are still nuances and significant differences between Unity and Godot that I'm still figuring out.

That's why for 2024 I'm planning on working on smaller projects throughout the year, with Repo being only the first. I have a couple ideas ruminating right now that will (hopefully) come to fruition over the course of the year, as well as some older Unity projects, including Uncle, that I'm hoping to take another stab at by porting them to Godot. Whether or not I get to any of this backlog this year will remain to be seen, but I at least have a loose goal for the year: post more games on itch.
